A basic guide to marketing lingo- in case you were too afraid to ask!

I do number of strategy sessions and always get asked about a few of these terms. I want to make sure that not only are we speaking the same language, but that you understand it clearly! Have you wondered about any of these key marketing phrases?


Search Engine Optimisation. Tactics and techniques used within websites to obtain high search engine rankings on the likes of Google and Bing.


Search Engine Marketing. This is paid for promotion to rank high on a search engine- think Google AdWords.

Target Market

The group you are aiming at to consume your product or service. While I appreciate the idea of a target market, remember it is ultimately an individual that will make the decision to buy your product or use your service. You need to remember and know that individual's persona for the best marketing success.


An ongoing, consistently updated diary-style page that is meant to provide information to an audience. Usually used as a component of content marketing. (This is a blog in case you missed it!)


Generally, the text or body of any marketing material.

Content Marketing

Creation and sharing of materials that do not necessarily promote a brand, but instead engage and inform a target market to grow and attract the group to the brand.


The material created for marketing. Videos, visuals, blogs, copy, anything created to stimulate a target market's interest in a brand. Content is an extremely important part of creating and maintaining good SEO practices!

Keywords and SEO go hand in hand. They are the words or phrases that make it possible for people to find your website. 

Editorial Calendar

A system used to define and control the distribution of content. It is meant to ensure brand messaging, utilisation of multiple platforms, and sharing of multiple different mediums. We have a free template available, just get in touch.


I really like the idea of an online community rather than an audience or target market. It is the idea of a brand building a strong following that is loyal to the brand and has a high level of interaction.

Social Media

An online application that allows creation and sharing of content through networking of individuals.

Organic Reach

People that will see your page or content through unpaid channels. Prominent on social media. The best way to obtain high organic reach is through creating good content that is engaging and shareable.


The method social media sites use to determine what content will be granted organic reach.
